Understanding HVAC Grille Sizing

HVAC grilles are sized by the duct opening, not the outside dimensions of the grille. A grille labeled 18" x 6" is designed to cover an 18" x 6" hole in the wall or ceiling. The actual grille is larger so it can overlap the opening and mount securely.

How to Measure:
1. Remove the existing grille.
2. Measure the width and height of the duct opening (the hole).
3. Choose a grille with the same nominal size.
